Auditions

General pieces of information

Neutrality

The Oak Park Theatre company believes in equality and fairness.  To ensure a high-quality product we choose the best actor per role when auditioning for a play.  In short, this means that seniority does not play a role when casting.  New students will always have an opportunity to compete for a role.

Format

Cold read

Durning the audition process the candidate will be given a part of a script to interpret on the spot.  They will have a short time to review it ( 30 secs approximately) and then perform with a partner.

What I am Looking for during a cold read...

           - Is the candidate comfortable taking a risk on stage?

           - Is the candidate able to create a character?

           - Can the candidate work with a partner easily?

           - How does the candidate use the stage?

           - Can the candidate interact, believably, with a partner?

Monologues

Candidates will be asked prepare and present a monologue.  To compete for any major role the monologues must be...

           - MEMORIZED

           - acted

           - Demonstrates character

           - Demonstrates storytelling

Tips

          - Find out what the show is and research it. Know what you are getting into and know who the characters are.

          - FInd a monologue that parallels a character in the part you are auditioning for.  You want the director to envision you in the part.

          - Ensure that your monologue is doable.  Do choose something that is beyond your ability.

          - Longer is not always better.

          - Confidence is key.

          - It is okay to listen to feedback while you are preparing but try and trust your instincts.  We want to see what you can do.

          - It will not count against you if you make a mistake during your monologue and need to start again.  The audition process can be intimidating and               it is not uncommon that candidates may need to restart.  We want to see you at your best.

At the end of the day, Oak Park Theatre Company is part of Oak Park School.  I am trying to provide the students with an authentic educational experience that will allow them to grow and a succeed.  If a student has any questions about auditioning or why they were assigned a role they need to please come and talk to me.  I will tell them what they did well and how to improve.

Please reference the Theatre Practicum Handbook for methods assisting with memorization and other auditioning advice.
